Dame Dash Recalls Aaliyah’s Final Text Before Tragic Death
Dame Dash is remembering one of the last messages he received from Aaliyah—and knowing what happened afterward makes the story hit completely different.
Dash and Aaliyah were more than just a celebrity couple. He has described the late singer as his best friend and has said their relationship was serious enough that they talked about getting married.
Over the years, Dash has opened up about just how much Aaliyah meant to him. He once said being with her taught him “exactly how happy love can make a person.”
But one particular memory has stayed with him.
Aaliyah was in the Bahamas filming the “Rock the Boat” video in August 2001 when she was preparing to leave the island. Dash recalled that she contacted him about the plane she was supposed to take.
According to Dash, Aaliyah told him she didn’t like the plane.
His response was simple: “Don’t get on it.”
Dash said Aaliyah told him she had to take the flight because of the video.
He also recalled that Aaliyah was already nervous about flying and often traveled with a satin pillow she considered her good-luck charm.

Dash said Aaliyah told him she was going to finish the video and come right back. She never made it home.
On August 25, 2001, the plane carrying Aaliyah and eight others crashed shortly after takeoff in the Bahamas. The singer was just 22 years old.
Dash has continued to speak about Aaliyah throughout the years, remembering not only the superstar the world knew, but the woman he loved and considered his closest friend.
More than two decades later, Dash’s memories of Aaliyah still show just how deeply he loved her. ❤️
