Jamal Bryant Pressures For Church To Return $300K Target Donation

Pastor Jamal Bryant speaks out boldly against a recent donation from Target to a prominent Black church group — and he’s not holding back.

Pastor Bryant and fellow faith-based activists are now questioning a $300,000 grant given to the National Baptist Convention USA (NBCUSA) and its partnered faith groups by Target. The activists express concern that the money comes with hidden “strings attached.”

Earlier this year, Bryant called for a 40-day faith-led boycott of Target during Lent in response to the company’s pullback on its DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) programs.

The boycott, known as the “Target Fast,” was extended indefinitely until the company made meaningful reinvestments in the Black community.

Fast forward to now — Target quietly donated $300K to NBCUSA and its coalition partners.

While the funds were reportedly for scholarships, senior care, and business support, Bryant and activist Nekima Levy Armstrong stated the move felt more like a payout for silence than genuine progress.

“It’s a slap in the face,” Bryant said in a recent video. “They haven’t responded to our demands — and now they’re giving hush money to pastors who didn’t even support the boycott.”

On June 22, 2025, Pastor Jamal Bryant slammed church leaders for taking a $300K deal with Target, calling it the ultimate betrayal:

“We are selling ourselves short” and “worse than Judas and the 30 pieces of silver.”

Bryant is calling on the church coalition to return the money and stand in solidarity with faith leaders pushing for systemic change. He insists that accepting the funds undermines the very purpose of the boycott. He and his allies are calling for a $250 investment in Black-owned banks, support for HBCU business programs, fulfillment of Target’s $2B pledge to black entrepreneurs, and a revamped DEI strategy that’s transparent and accountable.
