The U.S. Department of Justice has reportedly launched a federal investigation into the Black Lives Matter Global Network Foundation (BLMGNF), the national nonprofit at the center of the Black Lives Matter movement, over allegations that it defrauded donors who contributed tens of millions of dollars during the racial-justice uprisings of 2020.

DOJ Investigates Black Lives Matter Organization Over Alleged Donor Fraud

According to the Associated Press, federal prosecutors in California have issued subpoenas and at least one search warrant as they look into how the organization managed the massive influx of donations that poured in after the murder of George Floyd.

In 2020, BLMGNF reportedly raised more than $90 million, making it one of the most financially powerful activist organizations in modern history. But by 2021, critics, including some of the movement’s own local chapters, began asking: Where did all the money go?

Documents and property records later revealed that the foundation purchased a $6 million home in Los Angeles, prompting public backlash and renewed calls for financial transparency. While the foundation has defended its actions, citing operational and program expenses, questions about accountability have lingered for years.

What the DOJ Is Looking For

The ongoing probe is being overseen by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Central District of California. Investigators are reportedly examining whether any leaders or affiliates within the BLM network misused funds or misled donors about how contributions would be spent. No criminal charges have been filed, and the DOJ has not publicly named any targets in the case.

In a recent statement, the BLM Global Network Foundation said it remains “committed to full transparency, accountability, and the responsible stewardship of resources,” and denies being the target of a criminal probe.

The DOJ investigation is ongoing, and no conclusions have been made. Still, it signals a pivotal moment for both the organization and its supporters. As questions swirl, one thing is clear: accountability will define what comes next for the legacy of Black Lives Matter.
