Jon B Regrets Blasting Chloe Bailey And Gunna’s Sample
In a recent appearance on Shirley’s Temple podcast with Shirley Ju, singer Jon B opened up about his change of heart regarding his previous statements about Chloe Bailey and Gunna sampling his highest charting single, They Don’t Know.
In 2022, Chloe Bailey and Gunna sampled “They Don’t Know,” a track by Jon B, which many consider to be a ’90s classic. The song reached over
In an interview on the “Can we talk R&B” podcast, Jon B was asked his thoughts on Bailey and Gunna sampling his song titled “You & Me”. On the podcast, he stated,
“They put that ratchet record out, I couldn’t stand it. I wish they never did it.”
The 49-year-old Grammy nominee also claimed that the sample of “They Don’t Know,” which peaked at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1998, wasn’t clear before attempting to soften the blow.
“It’s all a compliment to what we did,” Jon B said. “That’s Tim [Kelley] and Bob’s [Robinson] compliment, that’s my compliment, but at the same time my lane is my lane and my area is my area and I earned that. “
Although the song reached over seven million views on YouTube, singer and rapper Bailey and Gunna never reached out to Jon B for permission to sample it.
“If you made a hit in your area, you do your song whatever it is, I’m not going to just come into your area take your joint, and make it mine and not pay you or whatever.”
In an interview on The Breakfast Club, Chloe Bailey ,addressed criticism stating,
“Jon B is an incredible artist. If that song didn’t exist, we couldn’t sample it. I love what Gunna and I did to it. I’m sad he feels that way, but, hey, everyone has opinions.”
Many people took their thoughts to X, formerly known as Twitter.
“A white man calling two black ppl ratchet is crazy,” @restinpeacebrit wrote.
Someone else said
“It’s one thing to not like the sample of the song you don’t own, but watch your mouth! Also, this is why I don’t care for blue-eyed soul (excluding Teena Marie). This is why I’m not impressed/moved by what y’all perceive as soulful white artists or white musicians stepping above… https://t.co/ZrR8kpPfIP — Clāy (@djordxc) August 5, 2024
Contrary to all the backlash, some people expressed their support for Jon B and believed he wasn’t wrong.
“They didn’t get sample rights to a classic, used it, and butchered it but people hung up that he called the version ratchet. You youngins don’t understand Jon B’s contribution to R&B movement,” @Lugo_Rivera said.
Singer Jon B Regrets Blasting Chloe Bailey & Gunna’s ‘They Don’t Know’ Sample
Nearly a year later, during his recent interview on Shirley Temple’s podcast, Jon B regrets, criticizing Bailey and Gunnas ‘They don’t know’ sample.
The singer stated,
“I regretted how I spoke on it the first time because I wasn’t used to being on podcasts. First of all, I didn’t do a lot of podcasts. So I was sort of new to that whole thing of speaking my truths in a way. It hurt me, because I was like, ‘Man, that could be my daughter right there.’ It hit different because I never want to come off like a hater or like I don’t appreciate someone remembering me in any instance to make a joint.”
