Bill Cosby Accuser Wins Civil Case, Awarded Millions in Damages

A California jury has found Bill Cosby liable in a civil sexual assault case, awarding his accuser, Donna Motsinger, millions in damages.

According to reports, the jury determined that Cosby drugged and sexually assaulted Motsinger in 1972 while she was working as a server. The verdict includes approximately $19 million in compensatory damages, with additional punitive damages bringing the total to as much as $59 million.

Motsinger filed the lawsuit in 2023, more than five decades after the alleged incident. Her case was allowed to move forward due to changes in California law that temporarily lifted the statute of limitations for sexual assault claims.

During the trial, Motsinger testified that Cosby offered her wine and what she believed was a pill, which left her incapacitated. She alleges she was later sexually assaulted while unable to consent.

Cosby, now in his late 80s, has denied the allegations and maintains that the encounter was consensual. He did not testify during the trial. His legal team has indicated plans to appeal the verdict.

This case marks another major legal development for Cosby, who has faced decades of accusations from dozens of women. In 2018, he was convicted in a separate criminal case involving Andrea Constand, though that conviction was later overturned in 2021 due to a procedural issue.

For Motsinger, the verdict represents a long-awaited moment of accountability after more than 50 years.
