16 Billion Passwords Leaked In Massive Data Breach
On June 18, 2025, a massive 16-billion-record data breach, linked to a system called “identifier for advertisers,” was discovered.
16 Billion Passwords Leaked In Massive Data Breach
According to New York Times, Cybersecurity researchers have uncovered a staggering 16 billion leaked login credentials online, putting billions of accounts at risk, including those linked to major companies such as Google, Apple, Facebook, and others.
The data leak, exposed by the team at Cybernews, is not tied to a direct hack of any one platform. Instead, the breach appears to be the result of infostealer malware, malicious software that infiltrates users’ devices and silently harvests usernames and passwords. These stolen credentials are then compiled and distributed across the dark web and hacker forums.
Vilius Petkauskas, a cybernews researcher, has been investigating the online theft since earlier this year and told Forbes that the breach comprises “30 exposed datasets containing tens of millions to over 3.5 billion records each.”
“This is bigger than anything we’ve seen before,” said the researchers. “It’s not just recycled data. This is fresh, active information.”
Apple and iCloud accounts, Meta (Facebook, Instagram), Microsoft, GitHub, Telegram, VPNs, Government services, e-commerce accounts, banking logins, and more are at risk. With this kind of access, cybercriminals can impersonate you, drain accounts, or even lock you out of your own digital life.
